A few weeks back a friend sent me a message on Facebook asking if I could make her this:
There was no explanation, no link, just this pretty photo. At first I thought it was a set of fancy felt coasters, but then I realized it was a memory game. See how some of the tiles are paired up and not all of them are face side up? Yeah...that was some brilliant detective work on my part. A quick search on Pinterest revealed that the photo was actually from this fabulous tutorial for Emily's Memory Game over on the purl bee. With instructions, of course I could make a set for my friend!
After tracking down some lovely wool felt from the sweet folks at Collage Collage, I dug right to the bottom of my scrap bin, pulled out my best fabrics and created my own version...
I wound up making two sets of 15 matching pairs which means I became very well acquainted with my rotary cutter, rulers and iron. I gotta say I loved working with felt for a change. Going to have to do more of these I think.
I'm so happy with the results and hopefully my friend will be too!
Love them! My wool felt suggestion is http://www.beardancecrafts.com/wool_felt.htm. I use a fair bit of it with my dolls and broaches and locally it was too expensive and not enough selection, but Natalie at Bear Dance is super fast and lovely to deal with.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tara. I also saw that Fabricana in Richmond carries wool felt in cream by the bolt! Of course, all these great felt sources are popping up now that I've finished the sets!
DeleteThey look great! Did you keep a set for yourself?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Holly. I couldn't bring myself to make an extra set to keep - it's a bit on the tedious side - but, I may tackle another set or two before Christmas.
Deletethese are lovely! it's also a memory game for grown-ups - I spy several memorable fabrics in there that we bought for certain reasons, and the scallopped easter egg one was bought by my great grandmother in the 60s for a quilt for my mom!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that was a vintage fabric! It has really stood the test of time!
DeleteHow lovely! But now I REALLY need a rotary cutter.
ReplyDeleteMedrie, get thee to Fabricland - stat! I can't believe you've made it this far into your sewing career without one!
DeleteI do love them, and Evie will as well. Thanks for coming by today, it was nice to see you.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to see you too, Laura, and so nice to finally meet Evie.
DeleteThese are beautiful! What a lovely gift idea. I like getting my wool felt from bear dance crafts as well- natalie is really lovely!
